DENTAL LECTURE
THE NEW DEPARTMENT OF OMFS AND ORTHODONTICS

This talk is to introduce members to the new OMFS and Orthodontics Department, which is due to open in the New Year.   The speakers will each give a 10 minute talk on the facilities and services of the new department.  The audience will have an opportunity to take a tour of the building site and see the work in progress

The Annual General Meeting of the Clinical Society of Bath will take place from 5.45pm in the Lecture Theatre.   After a break for supper, Professor Grey Giddins will give a talk about his experience of Clinical Error

Aims/Objectives:  
  • Explain how easy it is to make errors
  • Gain some understanding of why errors occur and how to avoid them
  • Show how particular operations are at risk of error
  • Talk about what he has learnt about why he makes errors and in general why errors are made
  • Explain specific techniques to reduce error beforehand whilst in surgery

Dr Inma Mauri-Sole and Serryth Colbert will be talking about the 3 most common skin cancers you may find on the face and what are the warning signs/red flags.  Dr Mauri-Sole will also advise on the best referral pathways to get the patient seen by the right department.

EBOLA-BUSTING IN SIERRA LEONE
THE EXPERIENCE, THE IMPACT AND EDUCATIONAL LEGACY

Professor Bill Irish was deployed and lead a small team of junior doctors, nurses and paramedics to Sierra Leone during the Ebola outbreak of 2014/15. It changed his life, personally, professionally and educationally

He will tell of his time at a large Ebola Treatment Centre in Makeni, Sierra Leone and reflect on the learning for the NHS from the deployment of many of its clinicians to West Africa during this difficult time

  • Issues associated humanitarian deployment of physicians
  • Global Health
  • Educational impact of medical work in developing countries

  • The UK-Med system for humanitarian response, and how to volunteer
  • The current HEE led model of global health fellowships being implemented across England

Trevor Dale specialises in Human Factors and has experience of training back to 1990 when he was part of the team that introduced the subject into British Airways as a method of reducing 'pilot error' 

We all make mistakes.  Fallibility is an unfortunate aspect of being human.  Learning to live with error is a must if learning, not blame, is to be achieved.  Very few people deliberately set out to cause harm, so for the rest of us whatever we did must have seemed like a good idea.  Understanding the causes of errors and trying to learn how not to repeat them, is a crucial aspect of creating a just culture

Dr Paul Jackson is President of the Faculty of Sport & Exercise Medicine (UK).  This talk will discuss how the specialty of Sport & Exercise Medicine has grown in the 12 years since becoming a GMC recognised specialty.  This will include the development of musculoskeletal medicine (MSK) and exercise medicine, and also the development of our higher specialist training programme and will show how the employment of SEM Consultants has benefitted the NHS Trusts

Colin McGuirk BDS MSc (Dental Implantology), MClinDent (Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics).  Colin received his dental degree from Newcastle University and returned to the south west soon after.  Colin has since performed extensive postgraduate training with dental experts from the UK, Europe and America 

His particular interests are in the management of complex cases including tooth wear and the replacement of missing teeth.  Colin's expertise is in utilising minimally invasive, adhesive techniques to restore teeth without drilling more tooth away.  He is involved in teaching dentists as part of MSc/MClinDent programmes and through independent courses across the UK
